What to Expect During the Pool Construction Process
Deciding to build an inground pool is an exciting journey, but for many homeowners, the actual “work” phase can feel like a mystery. You are essentially inviting a team of specialists to transform your backyard into a construction site for several weeks. Knowing what to expect during the pool construction process is the best way to reduce stress and ensure you are prepared for each milestone.
At Elite Pools by Aloha, we believe that an informed client is a happy client. While building a pool involves heavy machinery, dirt, and noise, it is also a fascinating feat of engineering. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step reality of bringing your Arkansas backyard oasis to life.
Design, Permitting, and Staking: The Quiet Beginning
Before the first machine arrives, the pool construction process starts with paperwork. Once you’ve finalized your design with our team, we handle the permitting process, and a couple of weeks before your start week, we’ll come out to stake the pool and check for utilities and access. During this stage, you might see utility companies marking your yard with colored spray paint (blue for water, yellow for gas, etc.). While it may seem like nothing is happening, this is when we are securing approvals from your city or county and ensuring that your pool’s placement is safe and legal.
Dig Day: Things Get Messy Fast
The day excavation begins is the loudest and messiest part of the pool construction process. A crew will arrive with a backhoe or skid steer to dig the hole for your pool.
- The Reality: Your backyard will look like a giant dirt pit for a few days.
- The Tip: If you have pets or small children, this is the time to ensure they are kept away from the construction area. Don’t worry about the mess; it’s a necessary part of getting started.

Walls and Plumbing
Once the hole is dug, the next crew arrives to assemble your pool’s composite walls and braces. These are checked for precise location and elevation before the footing goes on. Simultaneously, our plumbing crew sets your skimmers and returns and gets your equipment pad plumbed.
What to Look For: You will see a lot of pipes sticking out of the ground. This is perfectly normal and is the foundational plumbing for your filtration system.
Backfill, Bonding, and the Border
With the walls up, the backfill crew moves in with excavators, skid steers, and dump trucks, and will consult with you on where any extra concrete should go. If we’re using our regular electrician, the pool is bonded with a bare copper wire and inspected by the city. After bonding and inspection, we set up and pour your pool’s border.
Bottom and Liner
Now that the border is on, we pour the bottom of the pool. The next day, your liner goes in — this step is temperature sensitive, so we may occasionally have to work around the weather. You’ll be instructed as to when to turn the water off, since we’ll be filling the pool in stages, sometimes several, as the liner settles into place.
The Apron and Pool School
The final construction step is the apron, or decking, around your pool. This stage can take a couple of weeks, especially if you’ve chosen stamped or colored concrete. Pour day is a big one, with a lot going on, and once we’ve poured and cleaned up the forms, we move into final clean up, including the water. From there, we’ll schedule your Pool School, where we walk you through everything you need to know to maintain your new pool, taking as much time as you’d like.
The Elite Communication Guarantee
Throughout the pool construction process, the team at Elite Pools by Aloha stays in constant contact. We understand that your home is your sanctuary, and we strive to keep the site clean and the communication clear. We are here to answer every question from the first dig to the final splash.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
▶ Is the pool construction process very loud?
Yes, during excavation especially, there will be significant noise. We recommend notifying your neighbors in advance.
▶ Will my sprinklers be affected?
We often have to cap off or move irrigation lines. We recommend having an irrigation specialist on standby to re-route your system once the deck is complete.
▶ How many workers will be in my yard?
The crew size varies by stage, with different specialized crews arriving to handle excavation, walls, plumbing, and finishing work.
▶ Can I stay in my house during construction?
Absolutely. Most of the work is entirely external, though we will need access to your electrical panel.
▶ What happens if it rains?
Rain is the primary cause of delays in the Arkansas pool construction process. We will keep you updated on how weather shifts the timeline.
